INFORMATION

During which semester should I begin studying English?

Regardless of the level in which you are placed, ideally, you should start studying English as soon as possible so that you meet the Institutional Requirement.

How do I know which level I am in?

All students taken an English placement test as part of the admissions process at ITESO.  The result of this test will indicate the level in which you have been placed.

How can I find out the result of the placement test?

In order to know the result of your placement test, you can call the Language Department: (33) 31314 2930 or send an email to: hublenguas@iteso.mx

Can I take the placement test again?

You can take the placement test up to 3 times.  The first is part of your admissions process and is free.  The second and third times have a cost of $265.00 (2022 price).

Options for meeting the Institutional English Requirement are:

  • Taking and passing classes up to level 8 in the English Certificate Program (Programa Certificado de Inglés, PCI) in the Language Department (DEL) at ITESO.
  • Passing the verification exam applied by the Language Department in case of being assigned level 8 by the placement test.
  • Passing the PCI level 8 Proficiency Examination (ETS); you can only take the Proficiency Examination if you were placed in level 8 or have already passed level 7.
  • Obtaining a minimum of 550 points on the Institutional TOEFL test (ITP TOEFL) applied at ITESO.
  • Obtaining a minimum of 79 points on the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT).
  • Obtaining a minimum grade of 5.5 on the International English Testing System (IELTS) test.
  • Obtaining a grade of A, B or C on the Cambridge English: First (FCE) exam.
  • Obtaining a grade of A, B or C on the Certificate in Advanced English / Cambridge English: C1 Advanced (CAE) exam.
  • Obtaining a grade of A, B or C on the Certificate of Proficiency (CPE) / Cambridge English: C2 Proficiency exam.

  • Obtaining a grade of , B2 or C1 on the Oxford Test of English.

  • Obtaining a grade of B2 or C1 or C2 in all sections on the BULATS exam.

  • Obtaining a grade of B2 or C1 on the Michigan Language Assessment - MET 4 skills exam.

  • Obtaining a minimum of 650 (=B2) on the Michigan Language Assessment - ECCE exam.

  • Obtaining a grade of C2 on the Michigan Language Assessment - ECPE exam.

  • Obtaining a overall CEFR grade B2, C1, C2 accompanied by CENNI with 12 or more globally on the APTIS - Advanced exam.

  • Obtaining a grade of B2 or C1 on the San Diego State University - Leaders exam.

*Documents must be no more than two years old.  Both original documents and copies should be handed in to the Regsitrar's Office

How many points do I need on the Institutional TOEFL / TOEFL iBT tests to meet the requirement?

You need a minimum of 550 points on the Institutional TOEFL test or 79 points on the TOEFL iBT in order to meet the Institutional English Requirement.

What is the TOEFL test for?

  • To meet the Institutional English Requirement (550 on TOEFL ITP / 79 on TOEFL iBT)
  • To place me in a different level within PCI.
  • To certify my level of English and go on a study exchange.
  • To demonstrate my level of English in a professional setting.

Do I have to take the TOEFL to graduate?

No, it is not necessary.

Can any student take the level 8 verification exam?

Only students who are directly placed in level 8 are candidates for the verification exam.  Once the verification exam is passed, the student has met with the Institutional English Requirement.

What happens if I have not passed level 2 when I reach 20% of my curricular credits?

You would have to enroll in PCI to be able to register for classes.

What happens if I have not passed level 5 when I reach 45% of my curricular credits?

You would have to enroll in PCI and would only be able to register for 32 credits.

What happens if I have not completed the requirement when I reach 70% of my curricular credits?

You would have to enroll in PCI and would NOT be able to register for any course.

Where can I practice languages at ITESO outside of the classroom?

At the Language Hub (library, 3rd floor)

At the Language Hub I can find:

Various resources with which to practice languages, conversation clubs, advising and tutoring, Writing Desk.

A Dual Immersion session gives me the opportunity to:

Share my culture, learn about another culture, help a university student from the U.S.A. with Spanish, practice English with a university student from the States.

The Language Department offers classes in English after PCI.

 

The Language Department offers the following subjects in English:

  • Critical reading and written expression
  • Management communication
  • Academic composition
  • Public communication
  • Negotiation and mediation
  • English for engineers and scientists

 

You may take them once you have met with the Institutional English Requirement.

Can I take subjects from my major in English?

Each major offers different subjects in English.  Ask your coordinator about which options are best for you..

Must I meet the English Requirement before taking another language?

You can study other languages whenever you decide; you do not have to wait to finish the English requirement first.

How many Oral & Written Communication courses do I need to take throughout my major?

You must take only one mandatory curricular course.

How much do the tutoring sessions for Oral & Written Communication cost?

The tutoring sessions  are free of charge.

 

What is the LEO Program?

It is a group of complementary and free services offered by the Oral & Written Communication Coordination to strengthen your academic communication skills.
